The Parrotheads

Contrary to popular belief, Jimmy Buffett did not invent the parrothead movement. Gauguin was out sticking a lime in his coconut before Jimmy Buffett was even born. So were Jack London, Herman Melville, and Robert Louis Stevenson. The allure of the tropics is hard to resist: balmy weather, minimal living expenses, and uninhibited girls who are not only naked but willing to be your wife. That said, many painters still claimed they were there for the “light.” Henri Matisse described going to the tropics “to see the night and the dawn light that must have another density.” He proclaimed, the Pacific light “is a deep gold tumbler in which one looks.” 7

Should you decide to embark on a tropical journey of your own, beware of the following:

1. To the natives, you = walking dollar sign.

2. Bartering with market women who live in tin shacks is the ugly American.

3. That idiot with the salt-shaker necklace? Don’t be seen with him.

4. The changing mole on the back of your neck.

5. Rum punch does not make you more creative.

6. It only looks like play money.

7. If you’re white, braided hair looks stupid.
